Homemade White Sandwich Bread

My standard breadmaker bread recipe makes a usable loaf of bread, but it dries out quickly and my husband doesn't like how chewy the texture is. I tried this recipe and we're absolutely loving it.

It's just barely firmer than storebought sandwich bread, but is still quite soft and tender. It slices beautifully and tastes even better.

White Sandwich Bread

Recipezaar & Martha Stewart
Makes 2 loaves

2 envelopes active dry yeast
2 cups warm water
1/4 cup honey
3 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons melted unsalted butter
2 tablespoons coarse salt
6-7 cups flour plus more for dusting

Pour warm water into breadmachine pan and sprinkle yeast over. Add 3 tablespoons honey, butter and salt. Add 6 cups flour and start machine on dough cycle. You may have to use the end of a wooden spoon to 'rearrange' the dough once it's starts kneading.

Preheat the oven to 400F. Butter 2 loaf pans.

Punch down the dough and divide in half. Knead gently till smooth and shape into a loaf. Place into buttered pans, cover with towel and let rise 15-20 minutes. Brush each loaf with a teaspoon of melted butter and bake till golden brown and hollow to the tap; 30-40 minutes. Let cool slightly in pans on wire racks, then unmold to cool completely.

Hi, I was roaming through Stumble Upon I t and came across your recipe for the bread. I was ecstatic to see it. I had lost that recipe years ago. It is the best recipe. I had tweaked it a little back then. I used (Dough Pep) an enhancer. All natural. And then used 2 cups whole wheat and 2 cups white flour. That was it for flour. The dough pep works wonders. I let it rise twice. Once in the bowl and then in the bread pans. You are right!! It is wonderful fluffy bread. Love the Honey!!!Thank you THank you! Love your Blog

I'm fresh and new here as well but am just starting to experiment with bread-baking...the catch? No bread machine. Is there a version of this recipe that has manual instructions?

TKTC - absolutely. Follow the Recipezaar link and the original recipe IS actually a manual one - I was just being lazy. ;)

Fantastic- thanks so much!! My not clicking through was my Internet laziness so I'll try to redeem myself through kneading.

Beautiful bread! Definitely something my family needs to try. Quick question: I'm looking into bread machines - any suggestions? Of course I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but I still want something that works.

Thanks!

Ooh, I'll have to try this. I love homemade bread, but it never seems to be good for sandwiches. I'll have to try this one!

That is a very handsome loaf! I have gotten so used to making light wheat bread and have stopped making white bread. But in recent times, I have been craving for french toast so I thought I should make a white sandwich loaf this Sat which I shall transform into french toast for breakfast on Sun. I think I will try your recipe! Thanks for sharing!

TKTC - make bread as usual for just about any by hand white bread recipe. I let my bread rise in my oven with just the light on for warmth. Putting a bowl of boiling water on the bottom rack for humidity also helps my bread to rise properly. Allow to rise, punch down, shape and rise again to loaf size. When large enough, bake at 400F for 18-20 min. Brush crust with melted butter for a soft sandwich style crust.
I also brush my pan with butter before putting the shaped dough in to rise the second time. I do my weekly loaf in the breadmaker, then finish in the oven in a long loaf pan for a more sandwich sized loaf.

Can I make this in my breadmaker? Like make the dough and bake it in the breadmaker?

You are so right about this recipe and I am so glad I gave it a shot! The moment I slice through it I knew it is different from the white sandwich loaf I used to bake. I usually get a crust that is too hard even though the crumbs might be soft. But this has a soft crust, just like what store-bought bread is like! I totally adore this!

I am so glad I found you and this recipe. If it is as soft as you say, it has to be a winner.

This looks fantastic - thanks for sharing. I love a bread you can start in the breadmaker and finish in the oven!
